The Esbrina Research Group — Subjectivities, visualities and contemporary educational environments together with the Doctorate in Art and Education and the CosiCosa association are organizing the conference “Imaginar mundos posibles: Potencialidades, límites y fricciones de la ficción especulativa en la investigación y la educación” that will take place on January 19th and 20th, 2023 at Disseny Hub Barcelona.
The conference
Speculative fiction, speculative design and design fiction are becoming increasingly popular as research and creation tools aimed at generating conceptual and temporal displacements to promote reflection on the present and possible worlds not yet imagined.
The main objective of this conference is to bring together researchers, artists, designers and education professionals who are interested in this topic, and generate a transdisciplinary dialogue space around the pedagogical potential of these practices.
Specifically, we are interested in putting into dialogue communications that address these issues:
- Potentialities and limits of the speculative in the face of global and local challenges.
- Potentialities and limits of the speculative to explore the relationships between humans and non-humans in the educational context.
- Potentialities and limits of the speculative as a resource to generate displacements in the pedagogical models linked to processes of creation and inquiry.
- Educational tools and resources to imagine and design possible worlds with students.
Guiding questions:
- In what ways can exploring other speculative futures help us to reimagine our ways of living in the present?
- How can speculative fiction serve as a tool to respond, rethink and reformulate our way of relating to the human and non-human?
- How can speculative fiction offer methods of inquiry to study the human/non-human relationship?
- How can the speculative be applied to facilitate creative and imaginative processes with students?
- How can we engage others in the possibilities of the speculative, across different disciplines?
Call for papers
The sessions are open to two types of communications:
- Long communications: communications that may have an extension between 3,000 and 6,000 words.
- Notes: communications that may have an extension between 1,000 and 3,000 words, work-in-progress.
All proposals will be evaluated by the scientific committee of the conference based on the relationship with the topics covered, originality and quality. The works will be published on this website and shared with the participants. At the same time, the organization of a Special Issue is planned from the conference.
You can submit your papers to esbrina@ub.edu.
